日本のみなさん 初めまして。

我々は「THE SULTRY STRAITS(ザ サルトリー ストレイツ)」シンガポールを中心に多くの賞を受賞したパティシエが織りなすスイーツブランドです。

近年では世界で活躍するパティシエも輩出するなど、国をあげて盛り上がりを見せており、シンガポールの伝 統を踏襲し、色鮮やかなフルーツを使用した我々のプロダクトは、一つ一つ職人が丁寧に手作りし、味はもちろん見た目は時に荘厳に、時に親しみを感じさせる、まるで美術館に飾られたオリエンタルな宝石のような美しさを兼ねそろえています。

そして、そんな我々が新たな可能性を求めて初めて海を渡り辿り着いたのが日本、そして神戸市でした。

理由はとても簡単です。我々の国は貿易の中心拠点として異国の文化の影 響を強く受けると同時に様々な食文化を吸収し発展してまいりました。同じ島国である日本も同じように、特に神戸市は貿易の中心として古くから様々な文化が交差する港町として栄えてきました。さらに、日本では古くから「和菓子」という独自の甘味文化があり、「季節」を取り入れ色鮮やかに表現するという芸術的なアプローチ方法は、我々のスイーツに対する哲学とも共通する部分が多く、菓子文化や職人の矜持を大切にする風土もシンガポールに通じるところが多いと感じております。

そして何より、洋菓子に関する歴史も深く新しい物を優しく受け入れてくれる神戸市という土地柄は、我々のプロローグの場所として理想的だと考えております。

我々の名である「THE SULTRY STRAITS」という言葉は日本語で「猛暑の海峡」という意味を持っており、シンガポールを含む近隣諸国の共通のスローガンであり熱意を忘れない国民性を表現する言葉でもあります。我々はこの言葉を胸に悠然と広がる六甲山脈に背を預け、目の前に広がる海に可能性を託しここ神戸から、日本の皆さんに「新しい菓子」をご提案し続けたいと考えています。

The early Sultry Straits go a long way back, when it first became a critical passage connecting the East and the West in culture and commerce. As trade activity intensified, this warm and humid tropical passage brought ever new opportunities to those dwelling in the region, namely the Malayan Peninsula and the island called Singapore (also known as "Singapura" in the native language, meaning "Lion City"). The Straits thrived as the West brought structure and stability into the region. As commerce flourished, ever more settlers from near and far were drawn in, sharing the goal of seizing the opportunity the Straits provided, and the endeavour towards progress.

Singapore, the Lion City, took this same opportunity to establish herself as the foremost port for commerce, eventually becoming one of the busiest ports globally. The multitude of cuisines, borne by the newcome residents of the Straits in their essential and native forms and shared with those around them was the key common denominator that united the diversity, which brought joy and harmony to this intricate passage.

At The Sultry Straits, we refine the culinary traditions established, and carefully handcraft them into something that brings colours, flavours and fragrances that our audience can indulge in.

Japan, because of her rich culture and culinary depth, can appreciate such artisanship, and it became our focus to land our presence here to share our craft, with the hope of integrating the Japanese pursuit of perfection as we progress. The unique sweet culture of "Wagashi - 和菓子" (Japanese sweets), is an excellent expression of craftsmanship, that we hope to draw upon to further hone our craft.

With careful consideration, Kobe was chosen as The Sultry Straits' first point of entry to Japan. Kobe is a dynamic city with long and rich history as a centre of trade and flourishing port in Japan, and has been exposed to foreign cultures with a diversity of cuisine. These qualities led The Sultry Straits to see Kobe as the foremost city to begin its Japanese journey in.

The name "The Sultry Straits", means "the straits of intense heat", and is a unique term which describes the flavours that brings out the passion of the region and Singapore. As we embark on our new culinary journey here, we will continue to explore and innovate, all while taking inspiration from our roots, to create new culinary experiences for our audience here in Kobe and in greater Japan.

SYMBOL

シンガポールの国花である蘭と日本の国花である桜を掛け合わせ、この世に存在しない「花」をイラストで作成し、シンガポールの伝統文化の一つであるプラナカンタイルモチーフを採用することで日本での大きな成功を表現させていただいております。

The Peranakan tiles are a symbol of the Peranakan people, who embody the spirit of Singapore and the Straits. It is the unification of the different races, fusing the different styles of craftmanship. With the combination of the cherry blossom and the vanda miss joaquim, we are now harmonising the essence of Japan and Singapore.
